MikeQ "Cunty" mix for FACT

Cross-post from Shallow Rave.

I have posted about "cunt" a couple of times here in the past, but here's a fuller description of exactly what that is. Essentially it's a modern take on old school vogue-house, coming from the American underground "ballroom" scene where fierce drag queens and transexuals (as well as a lot of straight folk) come to hang out and compete in dance offs.

"Cunt" (yeah, it could probably do with a more PC name) is pioneered by acts like Ynfynyt Scroll, B Ames, Vjuan Allure, Divoli Svere and, probably the best known DJ in the whole scene, MikeQ. MikeQ did a special cunt mix for FACT mag back in February, and it's damn essential listening.

Imagine mid-90s drag queen/bitch house remixed by Diplo for a Baltimore audience, with a healthy dose of classic disco samples and a stuttered footwork aesthetic, and you're in the right ballpark. I am getting heavily into this stuff, even producing under the name Cunt Traxxx (my icon/logo gives an explanation to the genre name) as it's the perfect mix of classic house and new skool swing. MikeQ's mix has blown my mind - seriously, I haven't been as excited about a mix like this in a long, looong time. To the point where I am looking up the artists on the tracklist and trying to find the tunes (big shout to Bok Bok who has been repping this scene for a couple of years now!).

Unfortunately FACT have not allowed this mix to be embedded anywhere apart form their site, but it's highly, HIGHLY recommended listening. Go there RIGHT now and press play!

Well, it turns out Latrice LOVES this track, and re-shared it, resulting in 7000+ plays! And it turns out she wants to work with C Traxxx in the very near future to produce some new music - WEEEERK!!!

Manchester Is Burning

It was almost exactly one year ago that Growler and Niallist held our screening of Paris Is Burning at the International Anthony Burgess Foundation. We met some pretty awesome people that night, people who have become good friends and work colleagues. Sadly, some of those folks are not with us any more, but from tragedy can spring triumph.

We have some very exciting news about events that are coming up in the immediate future, as well as expansion of the whole Tranarchy enterprise. SO watch this space. The future is very exciting - we gonna be runnin tings!

I'm really looking forward to this! Tonight sees the first ever DRUNK AT VOGUE at Kraak Gallery, with house and disco form our friends James Sizen Bell (Terrorist), Greg Thorpe (Off The Hook) and local scene queen Thom Docking (though I am sure there will be MANY more queens there tonight than just her...).

Saltylips "If Ur A Bear (Niallist Mixx4Nick)"

This is post on a new remix I have finished, and the story behind it. Sadly, last month saw the passing of the legendary Manchester gay scene character Nick "El Beardo" Elliot. I didn't know Nick for a very long time, but I found him to be super-friendly and a genuinely nice guy. He came to Joe and I's screening of "Paris Is Burning" and we bonded over a love of the film and vogue culture.

Nick was the dancer for the band Saltylips, who had asked me to remix one of their tracks ages ago. I had heard "If Ur A Bear (Put Ur Hands Up In The Air)" and liked it, but it was the passing of Nick that made me pull my finger out and get the remix done. I have had to put a bunch of other work to the side to get this finished, but I think it has been worth it. It's a bit housey, it's a bit garagey, a bit booty and ever so slightly voguey. I am happy with it. My intention was to make something that Nick would have danced to, and Saltylips have thankfully informed me that this is the case.

You can download the wav file of the track here: http://www.sendspace.com/file/7y727z

This link is only going to last for 7 days, so if you want it, download it now.

Even though it is months away yet (next January, Joe and I have decided), at the next Vogue Brawl we will be introducing a special "beard" category so people with facial hair can compete against each other. The category will be named in memory of Nick El Beardo, and seems a fitting tribute to a man who is much loved and missed.

WILLOW SMITH versus HOUSE MACHINE "Whip My Hair (Vogue Dramatics Remix)"

I've set up a Soundcloud for House Machine, (whose album is coming along very nicely at the moment) and to help launch it I've done a cheeky wee vogue-style remix of Willow Smith's "Whip My Hair". This would be used in the ball category "dramatics" where the voguers really go off and do whip their hair (or wigs/weaves) around a lot. I hope they can werk to this:

VOGUING - House Of Ninja

Crosspost from Menergy.

Probably the most famous voguing house in the world is the House of Ninja, formed by the legendary Willi Ninja back (I'm guessing here) in the early 80's or late 70s. Even though drag balls already existed, as did the dance, Willi Ninja is regarded as the godfather of voguing, and is featured heavily in both the Paris Is Burning film and the "Deep In Vogue" video by Malcolm McLaren. In anticipation of our own Fierce Ruling Divas Ball on Saturday, here's a selection of some of the best moves by the house, that can also serve as a kind of introduction to how voguing (and "houses") work.

Continued here.

Menergy FIERCE RULING DIVAS BALL

As I mentioned before, we are putting on a drag/vogue ball in Glasgow on Saturday, in association with Che Camille and Glasgay, called the "Fierce Ruling Diva's Ball". There has been a bit of a buzz about this event, and people are excited, but lots of them just don't know what voguing is or what you do at a ball. So, I have put together a post on the legendary "House Of Ninja", probably the world's premiere voguing family, over on the Menergy blog. I will spare you yet another epic un-cut post on LJ tonight, but it's definitely worth a read and a watch.

Menergy.tv "VOGUING - The House Of Ninja"

Now this doesn't take into account the drag aspects of a ball, just the dance side, and I will do another post on the drag element soon (or get Munter to do it instead). But this has really tapped into something in me - the music, the dancing, the sense of respect that voguing can give to kids that society casts out - it's all there and I feel it very strongly. It's going to have an effect on my future music, I can tell already.

In terms of my own role I am not going to be competing, instead I will be MCing (and maybe doing a small bit of live performing). I'm really excited because I LOVE the camp vogue-MCing style, and I shall be channeling the great Selvin Mizrahi from the House of Mizrahi. And of course I can't help but be influenced by Horse Meat Disco's legendary ball host Filthy Luka.

There is a fashion show on the night too, and guest DJ sets from Jon Pleased Wimmin and Graham Peel of Dolby Anol. It's shaping up to be a very special night indeed, in a fantastic location, with some fantastic folk already involved (Vanity von Glow, Lock Up Your Daughters, Illa Masqua make-up and more), and I have to admit I am a bit nervous! :-D
